Tim has a long family history with the RAF dating back to when his grandfather flew Lancasters during the Second World War. Naturally it’s always been something close to his heart, so when he discovered that the service was recruiting media specialists he had to sign up.

He hit the ground running and has blazed a trail since his first day on the job. He attested with 7644 (VR) Squadron in 2014 and within 24 hours was on his first assignment.

He rapidly became the first Reservist in the history of the RAF to graduate with regular personnel on parade at RAF Halton and remains one of the busiest members of the unit.

His duties include reporting breaking news from the front-line for syndication to national media outlets, producing recruitment adverts, media training senior officers and voicing a range of output.

It’s one of his most challenging roles to-date, but he genuinely enjoys wearing the blue suit.

Tim talks RAF Media Reserves

Oddly I’ve always known what I wanted to do with my life, although it has adapted slightly since I was five.

Back then it was a choice between becoming Han Solo, or joining that new Top Gear car show thingy, but by the time I’d reached the age of 15 it had developed into a mission.

Yes I was now certain that I was either going to join the RAF, or work in television.

It could have gone either way of course, but I was lucky enough to get my first break into broadcast at the age of 17...

And the rest, as they say, was history… Until I discovered that I could become a Reservist with the RAF…

Now I do both and I’m incredibly proud to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps.

Being in the RAF is like being part of a big family and I love working with the team. Everyone serving with Media Reserves is a trained professional, representing each sector of our industry.

We have journalists, videographers, photographers, PR specialists and marketing experts. Even our OC is a well known BBC personality, so as you can imagine 7644 Squadron is a unique military asset.

It's somewhere that feels like home, a role that allows me to give something back and serve my country. It's my way of honouring my grandfather and all those who've given their lives to protect us over the years.

Lest we forget.
